ABOUT DEREK

Derek's mission is to pass the torch to the next generation of artists by uplifting and amplifying their unique voices and experiences through community-centric performances to spark dialogue, create change, and make lasting memories.

Derek's Artistic journey began in Portland, Oregon, he started his professional debut as Ralphie in "A Christmas Story" off with a bang, falling off the stage on opening night, but that didn't stop him! He trained with the Young Professional program at Oregon Children's Theatre and performed regionally, including Artists Repertory Theatre (ART) and Profile Theatre. High school marked a pivotal point when Derek directed a reading of "The Laramie Project," igniting his commitment to social impact through art.

He pursued a BFA in Acting from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and later founded Fearless, a theatre company focused on empowering teens through performances that raised awareness and funds for advocacy groups. In Chicago, Derek wore many hats at Emerald City Theatre, managing outreach programs and facilitating literacy initiatives. He also taught/directed at Northwestern University's "Cherubs" program. As an actor, he performed around the city. One of his favorites is "Since I Suppose", an immersive solo journey through downtown based on Measure for Measure with Chicago Shakespeare Theatre and One Step at a Time Like This.

A move to New York City led Derek to become the Education Manager at Acting Out, where he was a private acting coach and director. His quest for advanced education took him to NYU's Steinhardt School. His NYU experience and lifelong immersion fueled his dedication to Theatre for Young Audiences.

He recently directed THE STINKY CHEESE MAN for Northwest Children's Theatre in Portland, Oregon, and JOHN & JEN  at Northwestern University's National High School Institute Theatre (Cherubs) program.  Derek teaches theatre to freshmen and sophomores at the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) at Rosie's Theatre Kids.
